A family from Oakwood re on a mission to raise the profile of Halloween and make the seasonal event as big a deal in the UK as it is in the US.

Jacob and Susanna Valdez have given their home a spooky makeover to make Halloween 2010 a memorable ocassion for their three-year-old son Gabriel.

The family’s house is covered with skulls, bats, spider’s webs and of course pumpkins, and they are now looking forward to a night of trick-or-treating on 31 October.

The couple, who are originally from Mexico, got caught up in the Halloween fever during their five year stay in the city of Chicago.

But they acknowledge that their Halloween decorations may have been put up a little too early.

Jacob Valdes said: “In America they start selling Halloween things at the start of September so we though it was a good time to put our decorations up. But apparently not – apparently we’re a little early.”

He added: “It’s nice to take your kids out for a night of fun. It’s just a bit different, and I’m happy to give candy away because that’s what it’s all about!”
